Cannot delete network folders - thumbs.db "The action can't be completed because the file is open in Windows Explorer"

$

0

I have applied the GPO user setting "Turn off the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files" to every device on my network. It has been applied for weeks.

When I attempt to delete a folder on another server, that I have full access to and could otherwise delete with no issue, probably 50% of the time I will receive the "The action can't be completed because the file is open in Windows Explorer" message for the thumbds.db.

Every thread (of the hundreds about this clear 100% bug) says to enable the policy I have to fix this. I have, I've confirmed via gpresult /h and checked the registry key it creates under the user profile. I have no idea how a user policy is meant to stop what I think is the server creating or locking these files, or how with the GPO applied anything should be accessing the thumbs.db.

I am unsure what steps I can take now to ensure 100% of the time I can delete a network folder. This is such a simple thing I want to do and is stressing me to no end not being able to fix such a simple thing.

See below. This is from a server where I am trying to delete a folder located on another server. Notice the registry setting is set where it shouldn't be generating (and therefore I assume in anyway locking or accessing) the thumbs.db. I have confirmed and every other client that might touch this folder definitely has this same registry key set.

MPIO Support

Where can i get support in implementing MPIO DSM? Does anybody have an email?

I have a hard time implementing DSM for a storage system. I was hoping anybody can enlighten me. Also, I'm using a windows service as a path manager so i can monitor path status. Will the usual DeviceIoControl function suffice? Or are there any other way of interfacing with the DSM/MPIO driver.

Hoping for a quick reply. Thanks very much.

iSCSI target relation to disk

Is there anywhere that shows which iSCSI target relates to the specific Disk Number in Disk Manager?

I have a handful of ISCSI targets connected to a server, apart from disconnecting them is there a way to identify which iSCSI target is linked to a specific Disk Number.  I.e. Target 1 => Disk 7.

Hi,

I am running a heterogeneous environment comprising of Windows 2012 & 2008 servers in my DFS-R Setup.

When I run the below mentioned wimc command to check the status of the replicated folder on the server selected as primary member during initial sync, I see multiple instances (8 times) of the same replication group & folder getting listed in the output, however there is only 1 replication group "CriticalData-RG" & only 1 replicated folder "share-new" configured.

Attachment: screenshot of the output from below command

Spaces: Could not create storage pool. One of the physical disks specified is not supported by this operation

i'm using the Windows Server 2012 Virtual Lab to investigate how stable Storage Spaces are.

When trying to create a Storage Pool i get the error:

Could not create storage pool. One of the physical disks specified is not supported by this operation.

This happens no matter which, or what combination of disks (empty, dynamic, Guid Partition Table) i choose.

--------------------

And while we're on the subject of a lack of documentation, what is a Manual allocation (as opposed to aData Store allocation, or a Hot Spare allocation)?

------------

Edit: My question, just to be clear:

- what are the characteristics of a physical disk that are required for it to support this operation?
- where do i check those current characteristics?
- how do i change those characteristics so that they are supported by the current operation?

Note: This error happens when creating a storage pool. We're not even at the point yet where we choose the kind ofProvisioning (Thin Provisioning or Fixed), or the kind ofLayout (Simple, Mirror, Parity).

Witness Client failed to register with Witness Server error

Hi,

I have a 2 node Cluster with Windows Server 2012 and I've configured a Cluster Role with a File Server Resource. In this file server resource I've configured 3 shares with "Continuous Availability".

I'm getting our event logs flooded with events (on the cluster nodes and on 3 other windows server 2012 clients), regarding SMBWitnessClient. I get two different errors:

- Witness Client received error (The parameter is incorrect.) from Witness Serverip address for NetName Cluster Role Name.

- Witness Client Failed to register with Witness Server Cluster node name for notification on NetName Cluster Role name with error (The parameter is incorrect.)

Anyone seen this?

Carlos Monteiro.

Folder Redirection Group Policy change not applying to all users on all computers

I have had Folder Redirection (Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos, and Favorites) working fine for years now in an environment with a 2008 file server (no DFS) and mixed Vista/Win7 clients.  I recently moved the top-level share for the redirected folders to a different 2008 R2 server and simpyl changed the servername in the GPO accordingly.

The issue is that not every existing user profile on every machine will pick up the change.  I have been logging in to 8 different machines with five different user accounts and cannot find a pattern.  On the clients that were recently in-place upgraded from Vista Business to Win7 Pro, a couple of accounts get the new setting but most accounts do not.  On the clients that are clean installs of Win7, most accounts get the new settings but some do not.

I have tried checking "Enforced" for the GPO, I have tried running GPUpdate /force and rebooting.  I have tried editing the shell folders entries in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer and rebooting.  It doesn't make sense.  Both the new and old UNC share paths are accessible from a run command for the affected users.  I have the option to "Grant user exclusive rights to Documents" de-selected in the GPO.

If I delete the user profile, then it picks up the right settings but that's not a pretty option when we're talking about 25 users who roam around and use 25 different computers randomly.  To fix it that way reliably I would have to wipe out everyone's profile on every machine and possibly restore documents from backup.  Any other ideas?

Query on Files and Folders Sharing in AD Server 2012 R2 Standard Environment

$

Hi

Our organization uses Windows AD Server 2012 R2 Standard which acts as a Central File Server with Windows 8.1 and few Windows 7 clients. The default set up is like this: For a given user, a folder under his / her name is created on AD HDD and is shared only to him / her. Now, if there is a particular folder which the user intends to share with only few of the domain users, how to enable the sharing permission for that particular folder and restrict all other folders from shown for a given domain user (owner of the common folder)?

At present, if I share the folder created under the user, all other folder / files becomes accessible to others. I want to restrict that.

Please clarify.

Thanks in advance.

Configuring File Screen Template command actions via powershell

Hello everyone,

I am trying to configure File Server Resource Manager via powershell.  I am having problems creating a new File Screen Template with a command action.  I would like the command to run a BAT file and pass the [Source Io Owner] variable as an argument to the BAT file.  I have tried placing my BAT file in various locations due to the "0x80045317, The specified path is insecure" error but I also get a "0x8004530d, The specifiec property is out of range".  I also get this error when I run the cmd.exe command and invoke my BAT file through arguments.  I have researched this errors extensively and there is little to no details about what would be causing them online so I am turning to these discussions as a last resort.  Here are the powershell commands I have tried and their results:

DCDIAG Warnings after migration to DFSR - Conflict Mangled Value - msDFSR-ComputerReferenceBL

$

Hi All,

2008R2 and 2012R2 Servers

I do not think this is a problem but wanted to check and see if anyone else has seen this behaviour. No issues with replication t the moment.

I recently Migrated from FRS to DFSR for SYSVOL replication using the dfsrmig utility. unfortunately I am now getting the following warnings.

Some objects relating to the DC ******DC1 have problems:
            [1] Problem: Conflict Mangled Value
            Base Object:
            CN=******DC1,OU=Domain Controllers,DC=*********,DC=local
Base Object Description: "DC Account Object"
             Value Object Attribute: msDFSR-ComputerReferenceBL
Value Object Description: "SYSVOL FRS Member Object"
             Mangled Value:
             CN=1cbef19b-f564-4eab-bbde-a79206d60728,CN=Topology,CN=Resources,CN=
             DFSR-GlobalSettings\0ACNF:ed9f0c4a-1c5a-4bc9-8d1b-c66e667827ee,CN=System,DC=********
             ,DC=local
Recommended Action: Check that there is not more than one SYSVOL
FRS Member Object for this DC, and if so clean up the older
            duplicates.

This happens for most DCs, following some research it seems to be related to the fact that these DCs are in remote sites and also serve files for the branch office. They already were running DFSR for some folder replication and this object entry relates directly to the pre-existing DFSR replication group (for User Files).

I checked adsi edit and can see 2 entries for the dc under the object one starting CN=Domain System Volume the other CN=1cb... I removed the entry starting CN=1cbef and it broke the existing file server replication but SYSVOL was fine. in addition DCDIAG was fixed with no more errors.

No problem I just recreated the server entry on the replication group and it recreated a new entry in the on the msDFSR-ComputerReferenceBL attribute with a new ID. Both File Server and SYSVOL replication seems to work fine. But the DCDIAG warnings returned.

I suspect the issue if with the DCDIAG tool when you are utilizing DFSR on the domain controller in addition to SYSVOL replication. If anyone has seen this I would be interested to hear.

Many Thanks

Baz

Storage Spaces - unmark hard drive as "retired" after SATA controller failure

$

Hello,

I am having a problem with Storage Spaces - it won't start recovering the mirror set.
The mirror set got degraded because one of SATA ports on the controller went bad (I/O errors with any hard drive on that port).
After the hard drive is reconnected to another port, Storage Spaces still shows the drive as 'Retired'.

I can unmark the disk by running Set-PhysicalDisk -UniqueID id -Usage AutoSelect

Then, I can access a Simple (non-mirrored) thin-provisioned virtual disk located on that physical disk, and there are no I/O errors in Event Log, or any other errors.
But after I attempt to initiate Mirror set repair (Repair-VirtualDisk -FriendlyName mirror), the physical disk becomes 'Retired' again, although no I/O errors have occured.

Seems that somewhere in the metadata there is incorrect information about actual disk health state, and I need a way to reset it.

Thank you.

Hi,

we have configured DSF on windows server 2012R2 with several namespaces...

All these namespace work, but we meet one pb.

We cannot access to the root without specify the path with:

\\mydomain.local

If i try \\mydomain, i always have an err 0x80070035; Windows cannot access to \\mydomain

But if i specify a namespace: "\\mydomain\mynamespace1", it works...

Any idea ?

Thanks

Combining Work Folders and Folder Redirection

$

As I am sure everyone realises, the offline files and folder redirection system is far from perfect!

I have seen the new Work Folders in Server 2012 R2, and would like to use this for user data. There are a few questions I have:

1. I am wondering if it is possible/acceptable to combine this with folder redirection?

2. Where is the recommended location to store the work folders? Is it ok to redirect documents to the group policy default %USERPROFILE%\Work Folders\Documents?

3. If AppData Roaming is redirected to a work folder, and it has yet to be synchronised will this cause issues on the first logon with duplicated windows AppData, e.g. the TaskBar etc.

Thanks in advance

Storage Spaces - Virtual Disk Repair finishes Immediately but stays degraded

Have seen several other people with this issue.  Is there something that I am missing?  Had a disk fail, replaced it following the guidelines laid out.  The virtual disk will not repair, repair finishes in 1 second and the virtual disk stays in the degraded state.

Hi Team,

I had opened all necesasry FW rule bwtween Netapp and the Windows server 2008, now I am able to mount the NFS share but unable to write anything to it. Is there any setting we should do on NFS side or windows server side ? Is this something on the user mapping ? I had contacted SAN engineer as per him only root user can write to it, but in windows it is Administrator .Any thoughts on this topic ?

Extended partition but doesn't show in My Computer

Extended an iSCSI mounted disk from 500GB to 750GB in Server 2008 R2 Standard.  Saw the larger disk in Disk Management and extended the partition successfully.  Ran Chkdsk on the new drive and it shows the correct total, used, and free space on the drive.  However, when I open My Computer the drive still shows the same old size.

This is a physical HP server, iscsi drive is from a Netapp.

Things I've tried but didn't work:

1.  Diskpart and the extend filesystem command (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832316)
2.  Growing the disk by 1-50GB and re-extending the partition
3.  Made funny faces

I've seen this before in Server 2008 R2 on a VM but never on a physical machine.  Usually growing the disk and re-extending the parition has worked for me but not in this case.

Chkdsk results:

Windows has checked the file system and found no problems.

 805206015 KB total disk space.
 470081600 KB in 518767 files.
    250644 KB in 100413 indexes.
         0 KB in bad sectors.
722479 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
 334151292 KB available on disk.
