Disable Target folder

Greetings,

I am working for Microsoft Partner and i am implementing DFS in customer environment. I got recommendations that i should disable target folder on secondary node like below screen shot. I need to understand why i should do this? is this needed for all Secondary targets? or recommended if target folder in another site (like DR site)?

And in this case when create replication group, does replication will be affected?

Greetings,

I am working for Microsoft partner and some customer when they request implementing DFS namespaces, They wants to keep the same share UNC path that already exist on file server that still doesn't have DFS.

i know in this case i need to create DFS Stand-alone Namespace and depend on failover cluster for high available DFS replication but couldn't find article help me with step by step in order to test that scenario before implement in production side.

Please help.

Robocopy Log File - Skipped files - Interpreting the Log file

Hey all,

I am migrating our main file server that contains approximately 8TB of data. I am doing it a few large folders at a time.  The folder below is about 1.2TB.  Looking at the log file (which is over 330MB) I can see it skipped a large number of files, however I haven't found text in the file where it specifies what was skipped, any idea on what I should search for?

I used the following Robocopy command to transfer the data:

robocopy E:\DATA Z:\DATA /MIR /SEC /W:5 /R:3 /LOG:"Z:\Log\data\log.txt"

The final log output is:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total    Copied   Skipped  Mismatch    FAILED    Extras
     Dirs :    141093    134629      6464         0         0         0

    Speed :            1770.781 MegaBytes/min.

I assume some are files that are in use but others may be permissions issues, does the log file detail why a file is not copied?

ReFs RAW and volume data inconsistency?

$

We have been running Windows Server 2016 with ReFs for some months now. Its a supermicro server with 5x Seagate 4TB SAS Drives. Storage Spaces is running a mirrored layout and a hot spare. ReFs is the file system on our D:\ drive.

Today windows update restarted our server and the ReFs filsystem was not detected after reboot. The D:\ volume was recognized as RAW!

After some initial investigations we did a full shutdown and cold boot. When the system came online the D:\ volume was recognized as ReFS again.

I looked into the event viewer and saw several entries under \Application and Services Logs\Microsoft\Windows\DataIntegrityScan\Admin and \CrashRecovery. They look like this and entries exist since we took the server into production.

Volume metadata inconsistency was detected and was repaired successfully.
Volume name: D:
Metadata reference: 0x204
Range offset: 0x0
Range length (in bytes): 0x0
Bytes repaired: 0x3000
Status: STATUS_SUCCESS

From within the task scheduler i ran the Data Integrity Scan and a new entry like the above appears.

Questions:

  1. What should be my next move to solve so these metadata inconsistencies stops happening?
  2. Is the metadata validation ReFs does enough to protect my data or do i need to enable File Integrity on the D-volume to ensure my files are not corrupt?
  3. How can i know why ReFs behaves like this? Is it hardware failure, ReFs incompatibility with my hardware or is ReFs not ready for production usage?
  4. Will ditching ReFs and go with NTFS solve my problem if ReFs is unstable?

Move 2008 server cluster file shares to a new 2012 stand alone server?

$

I have a windows 2008 file cluster server. I need to move the existing shares on the 2008 cluster to a NEW windows 2012 stand alone server.

I have done the robocopy to move the data to the new 2012 server without issue.

The file security has come over without issue.

The shares have not come over.

If I try to export the registry keys from the current 2008 cluster file server, the path to the key is differnet than the path on the windows 2012 location.

The path to the registry key on the window 2008 cluster server share is:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Cluster\Resources\4fd56d51-475e-43a5\Parameters\shareIcreated

The path to the new location on the windows 2012 stand alone server is:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Shares]

It is obvious that the 2 registry paths don't match.

How can I export the shares off the 2008 cluster server to the new 2012 server location?

Is there a tool that can do that export/import?

The File Server Migration Toolkit does not appear to have the functionality. Can that tool export just the export shares information?

Any ideas out there??

Thank you

Buenas tardes estimados.

My Robocopy utility has been working fine for months and now it has stopped function. I am copying source W2K3 server to W2K8 server many times and it works, now it doesn't:

ERROR 123 (0x0000007B) scanning source directory y:\ebmsdocs\

THe filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect.

Both servers are running fine and I can logon and RPC into them.

Any Ideas?

Regarding updating the file 'Last Access Date'

Hello,

After executing the command "fsutil behavior set disablelastaccess 0" on my File Server, I could achieve the objective to update the Last Access date after accessing the files.

However, if I again access the same file after sometime, the Last Access date does not get updated. Is there any wait period for updating the last access date between two accesses?

Request help.

Thanks,

Changing DFS Namespace folder path

Greetings,

I am working for Microsoft Partner and i am currently working on DFS implementation for two file servers (main site and DR site).

After creating namespace and configure replicated folders we need to do the following:

1- If we have folder under namespace "A" and we need to put this folder under namespace "B", is it possible? or i have to remove folder from name space then adding it to the name. Noting that i have so many folders needed to change its namespace.

2- if we change the existing folder namespace, is there any action needed for existing replicated folder?

Storage Replica maximums for shifting from DFS-R

$

Hi Everyone,

Sorry if this has been answered, but I have been having a bit of trouble tracking down some information to verify what i have been advised for SR. I have tried looking through the docs on the MS site/Github but haven't been able to find the info I am after.

Currently we have a DFS-R server with around a number of volumes, with the largest being over just under 15TB; I would like to move these off our DFS-R setup to SR. This server has a large amount of activity as well.

My main questions regarding this are:

* Is there a limitation around total volume size that can be attached to an SR server? I have been advised 10TB is the max per server?

* On the back of the previous question, I know in standard edition 2TB was the max size supported for a single volume, is there any limitation for Enterprise?

* Is there a max number of files that SR can accommodate? I know DFS-R has a limit.

Non-tiered virtual disk possible in a pool with tiered storage?

$

I have a Server 2019 Datacenter with 6 SAS HDD disks (4x 6TB, 2x 8TB) and 4 NVMe disks (4x 1TB).

I have created a storage pool with all the above disks and created 2 storage tiers:

New-StorageTier -StoragePoolFriendlyName Pool1 -FriendlyName SSD_Tier -MediaType SSD

New-StorageTier -StoragePoolFriendlyName Pool1 -FriendlyName HDD_Tier -MediaType HDD

I plan to create a 2-way 2-column mirror with tiered storage (all of the NVMe capacity + 10TB HDD storage):

$ssd_tier = Get-StorageTier -FriendlyName SSD_Tier
$hdd_tier = Get-StorageTier -FriendlyName HDD_Tier

New-VirtualDisk -StoragePoolFriendlyName "Pool1" -FriendlyName "2wMirrorTiered" -StorageTiers @($ssd_tier, $hdd_tier) -StorageTierSizes (Get-StorageTierSupportedSize $ssd_tier.FriendlyName).TierSizeMax, 10TB -ResiliencySettingName Mirror -PhysicalDiskRedundancy 1 -NumberOfColumns 2 -WriteCacheSize 10GB
Can I then still create a non-tiered 3-way 2-column mirror with the remaining HDD capacity in the HDD_Tier ?

Problems to create Virtual disk in storage Pool

$

Hi all, how are you? I have a weird situation here

I have a Storage Pool with 192 TB using 8 Virtual disks with 20TB each one. If you check the configuration, I still have 40 TB free (it is correct, I checked the physical disks in use for this Storage Pool)

However when I try to create another Virtual disk, only show 1.44TB free for use.

Y ran in several times Optimize-StoragePool, with same results, is the same If I try to create de virtual disk using Powershell

All of this virtual Disks have tiering configured, but if I try to create another disk without tiering the problem persists.

Any idea about this error?

Storage Space Pool No Longer Recognized

$

Hello,

I had a storage pool of (4) disks, all encrypted with Bitlocker and ReFS. The system partition (Windows 10) on the PC got corrupted so I reformatted the boot volume. Now the (4) storage pool disks all show in device manager but are otherwise invisible to the OS. They don't show up in Disk Management and they are invisible from the storage spaces app and can not be added to a new pool. I'd like to recover the SS volume if I can (I do know the bitlocker password).

Does anyone have any ideas on how I would troubleshoot?

Thanks!

ResiliencySettingName and NumberOfColumns characteristics of a Virtual Disk with storage tiers.

I have a server (2019 Datacenter) with 6 SAS HDD disks (4x 6TB, 2x 8TB) and 4 NVMe disks (4x 1TB).

All disks are in 1 storage pool, in which I created 2 storage tiers:

New-StorageTier -StoragePoolFriendlyName Pool4K -FriendlyName SSD_Tier -MediaType SSD -NumberOfColumns 2

New-StorageTier -StoragePoolFriendlyName Pool4K -FriendlyName HDD_Tier -MediaType HDD -NumberOfColumns 2

I then created a virtual disk:

$SSD = Get-StorageTier -FriendlyName SSD_Tier
$HDD = Get-StorageTier -FriendlyName HDD_Tier

New-VirtualDisk -StoragePoolFriendlyName Pool4K -FriendlyName 2wMirrorTiered -StorageTiers $SSD, $HDD -StorageTierSizes 1840GB, 10000GB -ResiliencySettingName Mirror -PhysicalDiskRedundancy 1 -WriteCacheSize 10GB

The properties of the storage tiers and of the virtual disk are:

Is it normal that the virtual disk isn't displayed as a 2-way 2-column mirror with fixed provisioning? Is this because this is set at the level of the storage tiers?

Is there a way to keep the 'NumberOfColumns' for the 2wMirrorTiered-HDD_Tier to 2 (I have now 6 HDD, but may fill up the remaining 2 empty bays with HDD which would give a total of 8 HDD)?

Bitlocker & existing DFS

I have 3 sites, each with a Windows Server.

Site A = Server 2008 + local storage

Site B = Server 2012 + iSCSI storage

Site C = Server 2016 + iSCSI storage

DFS replication is up and running already and I would like to add Bitlocker to all 3 drives.

I want to avoid downtime at all costs.

Can I turn on Bitlocker and allow it to encrypt the drives while DFS continues to replicate?

If so, can I encrypt them all at the same time?

Thanks,

Chris

DFSutil Issue

Greetings,

I am currently working on DFS implementation project. Two DFS Server: primary in main site and secondary in DR site

i got recommendation from Microsoft to disable target folders in secondary DFS Server in order to avoid conflict in data replication. i have many target foders (above 70).

I wanted to enable or disable target folders by command and i found tool named Dfsutil.exe

i tried to run the command as below but it give me an error:

dfsutil.exe Property State Online "\\DFS01\FS01" "\\domain.local\sharing\FS01"

Noting that DFS01 is the server name and domain.local\sharing\FS01 is namespace share path

Error is as below:

Could not complete the command successfully.
SYSTEM ERROR - The RPC server is unavailable.

Any thoughts?
