I have 2 users who had there work laptops stolen.  I gave them replacement laptops and set joined them to the domain using Windows Connector software(http://server-name/connect/).  They have Windows 7 laptops and are connecting to a 2012 R2 server. After the computer restarts and I sign in to the laptop with their UN and passwords, the desktop does not load.  There is a notification about being on a temporary profile.  This has never happened before.  Below is the event log on the client computer:

"Grant users exclusive rights to desktop" is deselected in the folder redirection policy.

The user, admin, domain users, everyone, and everything that is could think of have full control of all files and folders for redirection on the server.

Files from other users in folder redirection have been updated today.

I have been messing with this for 2 days now.  Any help would be appreciated.

Moved to Server 2012 getting Access Database Corruption

We moved our company file shares to a new Windows 2012 server and are now having issues with Access databases becoming corrupted when accessed by multiple clients at the same time.  Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this?  We were not having any issues with this on the 2008 or 2003 servers these were on previously.

WINSXS - Removal Of Very Old Data

My Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 server is becoming very full and I'd like to free up some space so I came across the WinSXS folder which is currently taking up 11.0GB also here is some other details:
- Entries since 2009 up to late 2014
- folders dated from 2009 - 2013 equal 8.2 GB
- Attempted Disk Cleanup option but unable to see information populated in "Service Pack Backup Files"
- Ran command dism /online /cleanup-image /spsuperseded and got error message "Service Pack Cleanup can't proceed: No service pack backup files were found.
The operation completed successfully."

Question:
Is it safe to remove these files\folders within especially the older ones? If so, how do we remove these items safely. I've read several forums, and have followed directions but unsuccessful.

Thanks in advance :).

Extending C: on windows server 2008 standard

I shrank the D: drive and moved all the data to the new space created after I formatted and gave the space a drive letter G:. I deleted the drive space D: and ended up with the free space that I wanted to extend the C: drive into.  When I right click on the C: the extend is still greyed out. Is there a difference between free space and unallocated space.  I also tried to use diskpart and it tells me there is no empty space available.  Please help.

DFSR assistance

Hello all,

as I wrote to my previous question, I just started "playing" with DFSR, so I am not quite sure if I follow the right paths. I will explain you what I want to do and please help me to correct any mistakes.

So I have a File Server FS1 which used to be one of our File Servers. This machine will be replaced by a vritual machine, the FS2 which has Win Server 2012 and much more space. So the plan was to enable the DFSR between these 2 servers and after everything is migrated, then we will decommission the old machine.

The only data I need to copy from the old server is the users'  home folder (my documents, favorites etc). It's a folder of 180GB, so this makes the things simpler I guess.

What I did: I created a replication group between FS1 and FS2 , having FS1 as the source.

Everything worked fine and at the end I was missing some files on the FS2 and this is where the problem started. Under the folder target I disabled old server so people cannot access it and change things, and I also made it Read Only. What I didn't do was to make the FS2 as source and FS1 as destination (as I said I miss some files from FS1 , so I decided not to stop the replication until everything goes to the FS2 - I know exactly which files I  miss).

The problem I have now is that the Staging folder in FS2 became huge, almost the size of the folder I replicated. Do you know why? The staging folder in the old server is 18GB.

Any help will be more than appreciated.

Thank you!

Folder Redirection Rights Issues

$

I have turned on Folder Redirection on one of my customers' servers, and now, when creating a new file in the redirected Documents folder I get an error saying the path doesn't exist.  Yet it does exist.  Further more, if I open Windows Explorer and go to that folder, then right-click, choose create new Word Document, for example, I get a dialog box with the following message:

"An expected error is keeping you from creating the file.  If you continue to receive this error, you can sue the error code to search for help with this problem. Error 0x80070003: The system cannot find the path specified".

Which is weird, because I'm in the folder I'm trying to create the file.

Another application, Olympus Transcription software, tells me I don't have permission to the folder.  Yet, I do have full access permissions to the folder, and when I look at the Effective Permissions, it tells me I have "Full Access".

I have:

  • Tried disabling the anti-virus;
  • removed the antivirus;
  • created a new share for the redirected folders, including having tried "Everyone", "Domain Users", "Users" etc as having not just "read", but "Write" and "Full Access" permissions at the share level (as per knowledge base articles, plus just trying what seemed logical);
  • removed, reinstated and reset all permissions on the redirected folders - on the folders themsevles (as per knowledge base articles, plus just trying what seemed logical);
  • Created a brand-new redirected folders group policy object (as per knowledge base articles).

The problem appears to happen for most, if not all users, and for all redirected folders, that is, also for the Desktop for example, as well as Documents.

There is also a related Event Log entry, but doesn't tell me any more than I already know:

Failed to apply policy and redirect folder "Desktop" to "\\sbs\FolderRedirections\hbourke\Desktop".
    Redirection options=0x9231.
The following error occurred: "Failed to redirect because the destination directory "\\sbs\   FolderRedirections\hbourke\Desktop" is offline".
Error details: "The network path was not found.
".

I'm almost at my wits end...  Help!! Please!!

Thanks in advance!

0x80070043 The Network Name Cannot Be Found

$

We experienced a sudden drop in network share access in our environment today. Several of our users (100's) lost access to their day to day Data drive on their local office server. The issue was experienced across multiple office servers.

However the issue was sporadic and inconsistent, one user that couldn't access one share, the user next to them could but couldn't access the Data share on another office server.

We have multiple file servers each with multiple shares, our servers are running Server 2008 R2 and our workstations are Windows 7.

The issues was primarly experienced on the everyday 'Data' share, other shares on the same server were accessible. The folder was still accessible locally on the server and only appeared to be an issue for SMB connections.

We were able to identify a workaround by either restarting the client workstation which resolved the problem or by accessing the share using the FQDN instead of NETBIOS name.

We've troubleshooted name resolution and can confirm that Name resolution is working fine.

We've checked the Network provider order and this is also configured correctly on all file servers.

We've also ruled out the hotfix documented in KB2194664 as our servers and clients have a newer version of file mrxsmb10.sys and the hotfix is not applicable.

We performed a network capture on a file server that was receiving a connection attempt from a problem client and received the following results:

A successfull connection attempt to a share looks like this:

SMB2170 Tree Connect Request Tree: \\<SERVER>\IPC$
SMB2138 Tree Connect Response
SMB2222 Ioctl Request FSCTL_DFS_GET_REFERRALS, File: \<SERVER>\Users
SMB2222 Ioctl Request FSCTL_DFS_GET_REFERRALS, File: \<SERVER>\Users

SMB2131 Ioctl Response, Error: STATUS_NOT_FOUND
SMB2172 Tree Connect Request Tree: \\<SERVER>\Users

The connection attempt to the problem share looks like this:

SMB2220 Ioctl Request FSCTL_DFS_GET_REFERRALS, File: \<SERVER>\Users

SMB2220 Ioctl Request FSCTL_DFS_GET_REFERRALS, File: \<SERVER>\Data

We've raised a support ticket with Microsoft as this issue now has us completely at a loss and all current community suggestions for the 'The Network Name Cannot Be Found' error message have been thoroughly explored (name resolution, network provider order, KB2194664)

We'd appreciate any assistance anyone is able to offer

File/Folder move permissions not changed.

I am using windows 2008 R2 64 Bits

When I move a file or folder, the ACL is also moved and is not changed in any way. Even when inheritance is enabled for this folder, the inherited permissions are not automatically updated. The ACL will be updated the next time I have changed permissions, and this forces the parent to propagate its permissions.

When I try this on Windows Server 2008 64 Bits (Non R2) the ACL is changed automatically to the inherited permissions.

How can I make this possible in Windows 2008 R2?

Moving files in the same volume & Permissions

Is there a way to make a folder automatically inherit the permissions of the destination folder during a move operation on the same volume. If a user moves a folder from dirtree_A to dirtree_B on the same volume the permissions are retained from dirtree_A. Is there a secret key to hold down during a move or some better way to setup the folder security to make the permission change more dynamic during a folder move?
TIA Troy

Move file in same NTFS volume inherit destination permissions

$

When moving a file in the same NTFS volume on Server 2008 R2 the file permissions are the original one.

What I want is the file when moved to inherit the destination permissions. And I read here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310316 that it might be possible if I create a registry key MoveSecurityAttributes. But I created the key, the user logs of and on and when moving a file on same volume the original file permissions are in place, instead of the destination.

Is the KB obsolete? I tested this with Server 2008 R2 and 2012 to no success. Is there other registry keys in this versions of Windows ?

How can I have the destination inherited permissions when I move a file in same NTFS volume ?

Ps: I found two similar threads

Ricoh Aficio MP C2051 Scan to Folder - Windows Server 2012 Error: Authentication with the destination has failed check settings

$

I have recently upgraded a clients servers to Windows Server 2012 & since doing so have lost the ability to scan to folder.

Both servers are domain controllers and previously on a 2008 domain controller I would have had to make the following change to allow scan to folder:
 Administrative Tools
 Server Manager
 Features
 Group Policy Manager
 Forest: ...
 Default Domain Policy
Computer configuration
 Policies
 Windows Settings
 Security Settings
 Local Policies
 Security Options
Microsoft Network Server: Digitally Sign Communications (Always)
 - Define This Policy
 - Disabled

However I have applied this to the Windows 2012 server but am still unable to scan, possibly due to added layers of security in server 2012. The error on the scanner is Authentication with the destination has failed check settings.
I have also tried the following at the server:
Policies -> Security Policies
Change Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level to: Send LM & NTLM - Use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients and uncheck the require 128 bit.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) servers and uncheck the require 128 bit
I have created a user account on the server for the ricoh and set this in the settiings of the Ricoh and verified everything is correct.

Are there any other things I have missed?

FSRM quota not showing correct usage

The quota management of FSRM doesn't show the correct quota details for drive C:

It's used just to monitor the diskspace so no quotas have been enabled.

Quota details shows limit 50 GB and and Available 18 GB

But Volume details shows capacity 50 GB and Available 6GB

On a non system drive the values are correct.

So I don't get the needed alerts.

Windows Server 2012 R2 File Path character limit

$

I know that the character limit is 256, however I ran into an issue that has me confused.

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 Server with a Shared Folder on F:\ called FileShare.  FileShare has a subfolder Users.  I mapped a drive to my user folder \\Server\FileShare\Users\abcdefg to O:\ on a Windows 7 Workstation.  On the O: drive, I created a txt file with a file name that was 251 characters in length (that was the max before it wouldn't let me type anymore).  I received no errors.  Once you ad the ".txt", the 255 character limit is reached.

Now comes the confusing part.  When I go on the file server, the actual file path is 277 characters because the file resides on F:\FileShare\Users\abcdefg.  When I right click on the file I only get Open, Print, Edit, Open with, and Send to as menu options.  I can not delete nor shift+delete the file from the file server itself.

Why was I allowed to create a file name that long in the first place?  How can I remove a file like this from the server itself?

Hi everyone,

I have two virtual machines (Win 2012) and want to share an ISCSI target (QNAP-based) between these servers. I can connect to the same target from two servers in the same time, however, NTFS is not a network file system.

The question is - can I set up a cluster between these two servers, or windows clustering is only for hyper-v?

Problems accessing Server 2012 from another Server 2012

Hello,

I have 2 servers, one running Server 2012 and the second running Server 2012 R2. Both of those servers are to be used in DFS Replication.

The problem I am getting is that 90% of the time I am unable to access one server from the other one. I've tried:

\\servername

\\IP

\\FQDN

And none of those work. Only occasionally it connects but drops after 5 minutes or so.

I can ping both servers from each other without any problems. What is more, I can access any of those servers from any other machine that's running any Server version prior to 2012. I can also access any of those servers from a Windows 7 client.

The servers are on different subnets, in different offices connected via VPN. However I think this is irrelevant at this point as, like I mentioned, no problems appear when using any of the server versions before 2012.

To me it looks like a firewall issue, however I'm not sure which option is responsible for this.

Please advise.

Kind regards,

Wojciech

Windows Server 2012 Storage Spaces Simple RAID 0 VERY SLOW reads, but fast writes with LSI 9207-8e SAS JBOD HBA Controller

Has anyone else seen Windows Server 2012 Storage Spaces with a Simple RAID 0 (also happens with Mirrored RAID 1 and Parity RAID 5) virtual disk exhibiting extremely slow read speed of 5Mb/sec, yet write performance is normal at 650Mb/sec in RAID 0?

Windows Server 2012 Standard

Intel i7 CPU and Motherboard

LSI 9207-8e 6Gb SAS JBOD Controller with latest firmware/BIOS and Windows driver.

(4) Hitachi 4TB 6Gb SATA Enterprise Hard Disk Drives HUS724040ALE640

(4) Hitachi 4TB 6Gb SATA Desktop Hard Disk Drives HDS724040ALE640

Hitachi drives are directly connected to LSI 9207-8e using a 2-meter SAS SFF-8088 to eSATA cable to six-inch eSATA/SATA adapter.

The Enterprise drives are on LSI's compatibility list.  The Desktop drives are not, but regardless, both drive models are affected by the problem.

Interestingly, this entire configuration but with two SIIG eSATA 2-Port adapters instead of the LSI 9207-8e, works perfectly with both reads and writes at 670Mb/sec.

I thought SAS was going to be a sure bet for expanding beyond the capacity of port limited eSATA adapters, but after a week of frustration and spending over $5,000.00 on drives, controllers and cabling, it's time to ask for help!

Any similar experiences or solutions?

Branchcache and Remote Differential Compression - aka rsync - Server 2012 or 2012R2

Hi all,

I'm searching for only a short information, but it seems nobody asked that before.

Does Branche Cache Support Remote Differential Compression for Client UPLOADS ?

Questions is:

When a Client changes a file, how will the saving process looks like ?

a. Is the data writen directly to main-site or first to hosted cache server on LAN?

b. Will the client write only the changes back or the full file?

Anybody can provide some input ? Whitepapers e.g. ?

When BC uses Remote Differential Compression for Down- and Upload, why the hell i should use DFS ? OK with DFS you have more control and so on, but at least BC is more charming because i have the file lock feature supported.

Desktop Not displaying when offline from network.

My Remote User Laptops are displaying the desktop icons when they are connected to our network. When the machines go out in the field (and can't connect to our network), the desktop icons do not appear and instead I get the following error:

"Windows cannot access \\myserver\users\myuser\desktop

Error code 0x80070035 "

Obviously the error code is fixed once it's connected in to the network again or use cisco vpn to reconnect (and the icons return), but I need to maintain access to these desktop icons, even without a network connection.

I have already tried copy/pasting the icons from the network icons folder in to the public desktop folder on the local machine. That gets the same result, Any other ideas? I'm using Windows 7.

Ive tried using offline files setup via group policy with no success, im having problems adding the path to make the files available offline (the path is \\domain\profiles$) and i think the $ is preventing the option for "always available offline" from showing when i right click on a subfolder (the users data path for redirected files)

Ive read alot of solutions on the internet and am still coming up empty.

Thanks!

Storage pool Space full

I know this must have been asked many times, in my lab environment my storage pool filled completely while on vacation, it will only mount in read-only which is good because I didn't lose anything, but I can't mount it in read-write mode how do I remove data from the full pool so I can mount in read/write without adding an additional drive which I don't have room for in the box?

it's a 4 TB pool on server 2012 r2, it's a fixed pool of 4 1.5 TB drives
