Creating files

$

This is a very weird one, I hope someone can help.

I have a Windows 7 domain joined computer making a mapped drive to a DOS computer share.

From within the mapped drive I can delete files and edit files and moves files and folders but I cannot create files.

I have UAC set to never.

Why can't I create new files? example, drag and drop a file from my desktop to the mapped drive.

I hope this makes sense?

DFS Replication group _ I am missing something here

I have an existing DFS namespace that I recently added a replication partner and began to replicate select folders. I rolled this out slowly while reconciling the differences in the 2 shared folders.  The discrepancies have been limited to the expected files tagged with the temporary attribute.  My question is How do you get the second server to be available for users requests?  If the primary server is down the file shares from the DFS namespace are unavailable.  Do you have to set them up as a failover cluster to get the redundancy and load balancing?

-Thanks

Is there a way to expire Large Files over 2GB that have not been accessed in 2 years.

I see under the File expiration options that I can expire files that have not been Created, Modified, or Accessed for a certain amount of time.

DFS in Windows Server 2012 R2

$

Hi,

I am trying to configure DFS Replication through powershell. And I am able to upto a certain limit. The group is getting created. But error is while adding members. Doing manually also results in the error in the same stage.

In powershell the error is "add-dfsrmember could not add the computer to the replication group" and while doing manually the error is "The information cannot be retrieved for the computer. the network path was not found".

By the way, I don't have a Windows AD machine, which means all the computers are still in a domain of AWS directory service (yes, it's an AD in a way). I have installed RSAT-AD and LDS tool in the source server.

Can anyone help me on this issue, how can I solve this?

DFSR Private Folders deleted in error. Recreate or reset DFSR without having to resync 160 GB of Data

$

I have two servers that were using DFSR replication to sync 160 GB of data over a slow VPN connection. The VPN was down for several months because of ISP issues and is now up. I made the error when attempting to update the files manually between the sites using xcopy of overwriting the DFSRPrivateFolders. When that happened I researched the issue and thought that deleting the existing DFSRPrivate Folders and restarting the service would fix the issue. I'm now getting the following error in the DFS Event Log and replication is not working.

Event ID: 4004

The DFS Replication service stopped replication on the replicated folder at local path D:\Common\Document.

Additional Information:
Error: 145 (The directory is not empty.)
Additional context of the error:
Replicated Folder Name: Document
Replicated Folder ID: FE7983D1-B3BB-4A90-B9ED-F6F9EFD1AAB7
Replication Group Name: REEF
Replication Group ID: 52D7244C-B495-4928-9761-4B4B01BEE151
Member ID: 6AC30C0F-C5AA-4490-A34C-14B47627B6D3

Is there a way to repair the damage or reset the DFS Folders without having to replicate 160 GB of data again over a slow connection. I also want to make sure I don't overwrite newer files on either server with older files in error. There is not enough free space on servers to make duplicate copies of all the data if I have to start from scratch.

Thank you,

Robert Silberman

Can't find Unmapped Unix User Access option

Hello,

I followed the instructions found here: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh509022%28v=ws.10%29.aspx

in order to enable Unmapped Unix User Access.  I'm on a Windows 2008 R2 server and when I get to the "No server authentication" check box I don't see this option.   I don't see any of the options past this point ("Enable unmapped user access", "Allow unmapped UNIX user access".

I also tried the other two methods mentioned ("Share and Storage Management" and "Nfsshare.exe") and neither of these seems to know what I'm talking about either.  This option doesn't seem to exist for me.

Any clues?

Thanks,
Nathan

Seagate external hard disk RAW file system error

$

Have you ever got a RAW file system problem with your Seagate external hard disk? In fact, a couple days ago, I encountered this problem and always was asked to format before accessing anything inside. However, last week, I had transferred many videos, files and pictures of my favorite animated satires to this hard disk and had not found time to upload them to my online storage. I really don’t want to search and gather these stuffs one by one again. Do you have any way for me to rescue them back from this drive? Do I have to format this disk to fix that RAW problem? Any answer here could be greatly appreciated!

The requested security information is either unavailable or can't be displayed.

Why am I getting this message on some folders security tab when I try to check the security permissions through UNC\DFS?

If I log onto the server its fine.  I can view the security permissions
no problem.  I've ran a check disk and checked the share permissions.

I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2.

Any ideas?

DFSR - backlog and sharing violations

$

Hi,

i have a Replication Group Setup with a lot of sharing violations (accessed files) and lately i also saw a list of backlogged files. I also noticed, that a small txt file i created wasnt replicated either. It took a few hours and everything was replicated, so in General it works.

My question: is it safe to say, that when having a large amount of sharing violations and backlog files that also normal files will be queued at the end of the Journal/list and not treated with Preference ? Also in normal circumstances those not accessed files would be replicated very fast, but due to backlogs delayed ?

thanks for clarification.

DFS Migration from Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 R2

Hi,

We have DFS running with name space in Windows 2008 R2 server environment and now we decided to move on Windows 2012 R2 server. I am planning to add Windows 2012 R2 server to existing name space and create replication group for each share folders. once data is completely replicated then remove the Windows 2008 R2 server from name space and make Windows 2012 R2 server as Primary DFS Root server. I need suggestion and clarification on below.

1. During replication, users will be able to access the data?

2. Is my migration plan is correct or do we have any other plan which is good than above?

p.s: The data needs to replicated from one site to different site with same network different subnets. Any help much appreciated.

Thanks!

Karthik

Is it better to do a Robocopy first and then DFSR so the files are already there?

I have a server 2008R2 that ran DSFR and crashed and I had to do a name change (so it changed the SID). The DFSR stopped working also. I want to startup DFSR again. My plan is to remove all members and delete all remote files. Then start DFSR. Would it be better to Robocopy all files first and then turn on DFSR or just let DFSR do all the work?

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

we have a Windows Server 2012 R2 (fully patched)

On this Server we are running File and Storage Services. I was able to enable Shadow Copies on Volume F:\ (used space 419 GB, free space 5 TB)

When I try to enable shadow copies (rightclick on Volume -> Configure Shadow Copies -> click on Volume E:\ -> click on enable) on Volume e: (used space 82 TB, free space 5 TB) I get the following error from shadow copies:

Failed to create a shadow copy of volume E:\.

Shadow copy creates just one copy

Hi there,

On main file server we use one big 8Tb volume and shadow copy is enabled for it. SC is configured for daily backups, every night, 2.7Tb free on the drive, 9Gb current copy, no limit (was set to 800Gb limit, but I've disabled it). But it keeps only one, the latest copy for some reason and delete older copies.

Any ideas how to fix that?

Thank you.

Problem with Storagespaces LSI9207-8e and intel jbod2224s2dp

I´m trying to setup storagespaces on two server and a Intel jbod, the setup is:

Two HP DL 380p Gen 8 servers with a LSI 9207-8e card connected with two SAS cables to a Intel jbod2224s2dp.
Cable Setup: Nod1 to jbod connector A primary and A secondary
Nod2 to jbod connector B primary and B secondary

When I run the Powershell Command "get-storageenclosure" (on either server). The Status that comes up is "Unhealthy", but the column "ElementTypesInError" is empty, so I can not detemine whats wrong.

And when I look at "Server Manager - File and Storage Services - Volumes - Storage Pools" Server one get all info, including Chassi info and One server just get basic info.
If I disconnect the SAS cables (with the server power on) and do a refresh, reconnect the cables and do a new refresh. The server get all info including the chassi info.

I have updated to the latest FW (v0.13.0.9) on the JBOD, HBAs (P20 Firmware) and server (P70 08/02/2014).
I have changed SAS cables.

I have submitted a service request to Intel and they say it has nothing to do with the JBOD, it is a problem with the LSI chip controllers.
I have submitted a service request to LSI and the I should downgrade the FW to P19.
I downgraded FW on the HBAs, no difference.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm busy implementing FSRM FCI to classify files using PowerShell. The Windows PowerShell Classifier module is integrated in Windows 2012 R2. So when I launch the fsrm.msc I am able to choose the module and in a new popup window I can paste a PowerShell script for classification to do fancy stuff.

No I am able to set a string value from script, but when I try to use the examples from the SDK (f.i. '$propertyBag.Name' or '$PropertyBag.RelativePath'  no value is being returned. Also when I write to Windows Eventlog nothing is being written.

The following command was actually working from the PowerShell script:
Write-EventLog -LogName MM-log -Source MM-Powershell -Message "test message" -EventId 0 -EntryType information

Can anyone post examples how to use the module in Windows 2012? Do I need to change begin{} also? In the examples only the process{} part is given (http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2009/08/14/using-windows-powershell-scripts-for-file-classification.aspx)

In C# you need to get the name in "public void OnBeginFile". But then only "Name" is working and being returned. I was not able to get the path of the file being classified.

I really need to do some classification before uploading files to SharePoint. Hope someone can help me out.

What I can do in PowerShell ISE (working)

# Set the value of the "Demo" property to "DemoValue2"
#$cm.SetFileProperty("C:\FCItest\Demo\pwsdemofile.txt", "Demo", "DemoValue2")#

# Get and display the value of the "Demo" property
#$Demo = $cm.GetFileProperty("C:\FCItest\Demo\pwsdemofile.txt", "Demo", 0)
#Write-Host $Demo.Value

**
What I can do in FSRM (working)

$PropertyBag = $_
$FileName = $PropertyBag.Name
$FilePath = $PropertyBag.RelativePath
$SpecialString = ‘Confidential’

-> Value 'Confidential' is being returned and set to the property chosen in the FCI rule

**
What should working in FSRM but not returning any values (example from SDK: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.1\Samples\winbase\FSRM\PowerShellHostClassifier\CS\powershell_scripts\demo_script)

process{
 $propertyBag = $_

 #get the file name
 $fileName = $propertyBag.Name

 if($fileName -like "*.txt")
 {
#set the property to the name without .txt
  $fileName.Substring(0, $fileName.Length-4 )
 }
}

Data Deduplication - max memory allocation

Hi

i encountered this issue on a server:

2012R2

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2891882/

i have configured the value from the KB, but i still get:

Data Deduplication detected job type "Optimization" on volume "\\?\Volume{8ce5ac3c-46df-4a37-8a9e-c4b28f1354d1}\" uses too much memory. 3179 MB is assigned. 3870 MB is used.

Data Deduplication cancelled job type "Optimization" on volume "\\?\Volume{8ce5ac3c-46df-4a37-8a9e-c4b28f1354d1}\". It uses too much memory than the amount assigned to it.

for the volume with most data.

can the value be increased?

Domain Based DFS Namespace with DNS-Alias

Hi Community,

i found already some posts in this forum about the question on how to use a CNAME records for a DFS-N domain based namespace but they are all pretty uniformative / unspecific.

Scenario:

AD Forest (2003 FL) with two AD-Domains & 10 AD-Sites. We want 1 or 2 DFS-N namespace servers per AD-Site with one big namespace. We want to use an CNAME for the ad domain to access the dfs-n ressources by a shorter name. For example the DNS Domain Name ist sub.domain.tld and the root namespace is Contoso we want to access it with the CNAME fileserver (fileserver.sub.domain.tld CNAME points to sub.domain.tld). UNC with Alias is \\fileserver\Contoso and the sub.domain.tld is in the suffix search list.

Questions:

- Do we need to set the "DisableStrictNameChecking" on all Domain Controllers?
- Is Kerberos Authentication still supported or do we need to add SPNs and to which computer objects?
- Is the Namespace still "AD Site Aware" and the client uses the closest available namespace server?
- Does it work for SMB1, SMB2 & SMB3 Clients?
- Is it fully supported?
- Some bigger disadvantages with this configuration?

Thanks.
