Windows Server 2012 R2 Slow Connection to Mapped Drives.

$

The connection between our server and our mapped drives is very slow when transferring and reading data. Here is what I tried so far.

Under the advanced tab in device manager under network card I disabled:

Ipv4 checksum offload
largesend offload V2(ipv4)
largesend offload V2(ipv6)
TCP Checksum offload (ipv4)
TCP checksum offload (ipv6)
Udp checksum offload (ipv4)

Udp checksum offload (ipv6)

this seemed to help a little bit but still very slow compared to all are other older servers. We use a GS728TP 24-Port Gigabit Smart Switch was should handle most basic stuff we do.

Sorry for this Question.

I would like tounderstand one thing.
Current architecture:
2Windows2012R2ClusterwithFileServerin DFS-Nin the domain(mainsite)

DRsiteto be created

Iread that it ispossible andsupportedthe DFSclustered.

I also readthat theDFS-Rdoes not support thereplicationof the contentin theCSV.

What does that mean?

If I havemy filesin theDFSfoldershosted ontheSAN disksin the cluster, the files are replicated?

Thanks a lot for the explanation

Storage Spaces and Hyper V

$

Hi,

My current setup is a workstation running Windows 10 Enterprise which also acts as a Hyper V host for various server guests. Ideally I wanted to pass a load of disks through from the host to one of the Windows Server 2012 R2 guests so that I could host a storage pool in the guest and then create shares on that which could be accessed by other guests, the host and even other physical pcs. If I could have created this setup then I could have enabled data deduplication for some volumes on the storage pool and the guest could have handled data integrity scans. Given that the setup is not possible, I am now left with creating the storage pool on the host - this is not ideal as it does not allow me to use deduplication and does not enable data integrity on volumes as standard. Once a volume is created I can then pass it through to whichever guest I need to.

Are there any other drawbacks with this approach? The only remaining question in my mind is how data integrity is handled for the volumes that have been passed through - are they scanned by the scheduled task in the guest/host? What happens if an error is detected whilst they are passed through to the guest - where will I be notified? Edit - I have looked at the logs for the data integrity tests and I cannot see any reference to the passed through volumes in either the guest or host. Is this a known issue? The only way I can see to resolve it would be to wipe all the drives on the host storage pool, format them to ntfs and add a vhdx file to each that takes up the entire drive, then attach these to the guest and use them to create my storage pool - I assume that would work(?)

Also, in addition, could anyone explain what the difference between "Enabled" and "Enforced" is when I run the Get-FileIntegrity powershell cmdlet?

Please feel free to move this post if it is not in the most relevant forum.

Thanks in advance

Shared folder - restricted permission on the subfolder

$

Hi,

I have the task/problem: I have shared folder Root, where user-A has read/write permissions, souser-A can create subfolders, delete subfolders, create/delete files in Root folder and in subfolders too. In Root folder I'd like to create subfolderStorage (with next subfolders and files), where user-A can only read. Is it possible to do it?

My solution (doesn't work) is set on folder Storage read-only permission foruser-A. It's working for all subfolders of Storage - user-A can only read - delete nothing in folder Storage - it's ok. But if the folderStorage is empty,user-A can delete this folder! I've found, that I must set on Storage folder special permission Deny: Delete and Deny: Delete subfolders. I've turned off inherited permissions on folder Storage too. I've done this all but without success.User-A can still delete whole empty folder Storage.

  • Root
  • Root\samethingFolder
  • Root\somethingFolder\somethingFile.xxx
  • Root\somethingFile.xxx
  • ...
  • Root\Storage - this folder I'd like to have only for read foruser-A

Thank you for your help.

This is nonsense, right? CSV with unshared SAS JBOD?

The Scenario

I have a <storage vendor consultant> telling me that I can connect a Dell MD1400 #1 to server #1, then connect Dell MD1400 #2 to server #2, then somehow add these to a CSV to be used by a failover cluster consisting of servers #1 and #2. Note: each MD1400 is connected only to one node's SAS HBA card - they are not connected to both.

Verdict?

So...this person's suggestion is total nonsense, right? I was under the impression that any storage you're going to add to a Windows Server 2012 R2 Storage Space CSV (not Storage Spaces Direct here) had to be visible to all nodes; in the case of SAS JBOD's - each JBOD would have a SAS connection to each failover cluster node, right?

Add Clustered File Role as DFS Target (Server 2012)

$

Hi,

From my research, this should be possible, but I am not getting it to work. What I would like to do is add a clustered file server as a target on an existing DFS folder (so that I can move to the clustered file server, but not need to change any paths).

Adding the target folder seems to go fine, but during testing, referrals were not going to my new target.

Running DFSDiag /TestReferrals, I get this error on the "TestSites" section of the diagnostic:

Validating the site associations on every domain controller of the following: Clustered-Role-Name.domain.com
Error: The format of the specified computer name is invalid.

The name of the clustered role is essentially "domain-file-users.domain.domain.com", which seems like a valid computer name to me.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Matthew

UPDATE: I had been using a DHCP address, which I changed to static. The hostname was also 15 characters long, so I shortened it to 14. I also checked the box in failover cluster manager to update the PTR record. None of these actions helped. I also verified that the cluster name is registered in WINS.

Windows Explorer on clients keeps on jumping one or more levels up in DFS namespace

Hello community.

Since about two weeks, several of my organization's users are complaining about strange behavior of Windows Explorer. When browsing through our main DFS namespace and accessing shares on file servers, the current folder sometimes just jumps one or more levels up, without any apparent reason to do so.

As an example, suppose a user had the following folder open in Explorer:

\\path.to.some\DFS\path\and\share\with\subdirs\

Then the current folder successively jumps up one level one by one to:

\\path.to.some\DFS\path\and\share\with\
\\path.to.some\DFS\path\and\share\
\\path.to.some\DFS\path\and\

Additionally, the client systems sometimes complain about not being able to access files on the share.

Unfortunately, I was not able to reproduce it on my own machines. But several of our users are complaining about such behavior, and one user even filmed it to make me believe it.

Some details about our environment:

  • DFS namespace is served by 4 servers with DFS-N role enabled. Two run on on Windows Server 2008R2 and two on 2012R2.
  • dfsdiag.exe do not indicate any problems with the namespace.
  • Neither the DFS-N servers nor the file servers are reporting anything suspicious in the system event log.
  • The servers hosting the actual file shares are running on Win2008R2, Win2012R2 and Linux. The problem has only been reported on the shares hosted on Win2008R2 and Win2012R2.
  • Client systems running both Windows 7 and Windows 10 have been reported to show this behavior. All client and server systems have the latest updates installed.
  • Recently, the Win2008R2 domain controllers were replaced by others running Win2012R2. Forest and domain functional level have been raised to Win2012R2.
  • We've had some storage performance issues recently, however this may just be a coincidence.

I tried hard to find similar problem reports (and solutions to them) on the net, but didn't find any. Can anybody give me a hint on what might be the cause for this?

Thanks for any thoughts on this!

C: drive - Hyper V on seperate driver?

Hello,

Currently we have two drives.

On C: drive Windows Server 2012 R2 is installed and around 15 virtual machines in Hyper-V

On D: drive only Hyper -V

We are experiencing in my eyes poor performanse.

Since we are using three SQL servers of which main is on C: drive it takes ages to load 13 hosted databases ( they are around 1.1 GB in size ).

Would moving Hyper-V machines to a New E: driver / All SQL servers on D: drive and leaving basic OS only on C: drive improve performance?

(Of course it will )

I'm just wondering how much of improvment in work speed?

Our drives: HP 689287-003 600GB 10K RPM 2.5" SAS HDD EG0600FCSPL

Server: HP ProLiant DL360 Gen9

Thank You for reading.

How can I hide the properties of some files ?

$

Hello,

I would like to hide the file properties (especialy "Date modified") in a shared folder, on the 2012 server.

These informations should be hidden for a specific Security Group.
Is it possible to modify/restrict these informations via the Security properties (of the folder) or a GPO ?

If the informations cannot be hidden, I would just delete them.
However (even as logged as admin), the menu "Detail" -> "Remove properties and personal information" does not allow me to modify/delete the information...

Thanks in advance for your help.

Cross Forest DFS namespace access Windows 2008

$

Background
Domain A we will call TestDomA.com
Domain B we will call TestDomB.com
Domain A is a 2008 Domain with domain based DFS 1 namespace as TestDomA\Common. We have separate Windows 2008 DC in this domain.
Domain B is a 2008 Domain with different domain based DFS. similar namespace in that domain like TestDomB\Common
Domain A has Two-Way Trust with Domain B and this is Forest Wide Authentication. This allows Domain B users to access resources within Domain A.

I want users in Domain B to be able to access DFS namespaces in Domain A. i.e.\\TestDomA\Common

I have configured the Share and Security permissions on the DFSRoots directory on the 1 DFS roots in Domain A to Read, List, Read & Execute for users in DomainB
I have configured DNS forwarder for DomainA in the DomainB DNS server.
I can able to ping the domain FQDN TestDomA.com from DomainB

From a Domain B workstation, i get the following when i type:

\\fox.net\                      =    I see Netlogon & Sysvol

\\IP ADDRESS\             =    I see Netlogon, Sysvol, & DFSShare, but when i double click the DFSShare i get the below error message ****

****Error Message Reads: "\\IP ADDRESS\Share is not accessible.
Network Path Not found. Error code: 0x80070035
I can open and navigate the Sysvol and Netlogon folders just fine.
Even I can browse normal share folders in Domain A from DomainB but not the DFS namespaces.

I want users in Domain B to be able to access DFS in Domain A.

Thanks.

DFS and Namespace Servers and Name Resolution

$

We have Several 2008 R2 Servers that are setup with repicating Data between them.  The Data Replication seems to be working fine...  Accessing the Data on the other hand can be a trick.  I have two Issues:

Issue 1: We have users mount shared drives in a Login Script, they use the DFS Namespacve to mount the share.

net use p: \\<NTdomainName>\projects

We are getting to the point where two machines with Fresh Windows 7 Installes are booted up side by side and one can access the DFS Namespace and the other cannot. Both using the same Logon Server. Both can Ping who ever they want.

Issue 2:

The Name Space Server (Singular) has gone down and none of the machines can access the Local Replica Sets as it does not have a Namespace Server to figure it out.  Should there be a Namespace Server in each site and how do I add just a Namespace Server? We do not replicate that much Data and some of the remote office DCs are the Replica Servers.

Thanks,

Windows 2012 DFS with ABE

Hello,

I just got tasked with the reorganization of our DFS / Groups / accessrights.

We have around 600 Groups. My boss asked for "best practice" here. I tried to find anything but couldn´t find anything. Any ideas? Or something which comes close to best practice?

DFSR - Event ID 4004 on Primary & Event ID 5012 on Secondary

$

I have 2 Virtual Server 2012 R2 servers, each on different physical host machines. I have 5 shared folders on the Primary Server that I want replicated to the Secondary Server. For each share I pre-seeded the folder on the secondary server with Robocopy. I then shared the folder, created the folder target and replication group. The first 4 groups were created about a week before the 5th group. Only the 5th group is showing no errors when running a DFSR Health report. I've tried the following steps to correct this on one of the first 4 folders/replication groups by doing the following:

1. Simply deleting the replication group and recreating it. After both deleting and recreating running: repadmin /syncall /AeD & dfsrdiag pollad (on both servers)

2. Deleting the replication group, running the same commands listed above, with the additional step of deleting the DFSR Private folders from both folders.

3. Deleting the replication group, renaming the folder on the second server, creating a new folder to replicate to, running the same commands listed above and deleting the DFSR Private folder from the Primary server.

The results are all the same.

Primary Server DFS Replication Log:

Event ID: 4004

The DFS Replication service stopped replication on the replicated folder at local path D:\Shared Folders\Software.

Additional Information:
Error: 9098 (A tombstoned content set deletion has been scheduled)
Additional context of the error:
Replicated Folder Name: Software
Replicated Folder ID: 7AC4CC7C-0BB0-47C5-85BA-4616DF18DD49
Replication Group Name: Software
Replication Group ID: 32239F2B-F942-4C49-ACC9-E356A2B57BC3
Member ID: C7827277-65D2-40A7-8EC8-F1C795994A37

Secondary Server DFS Replication Log:

Event ID: 5012

The service will retry the connection periodically.

Additional Information:
Error: 9026 (The connection is invalid)
Connection ID: EC0E5D7E-6853-4D6C-A3D6-BC48F7411DCD
Replication Group ID: 32239F2B-F942-4C49-ACC9-E356A2B57BC3

It seems odd that one of the 5 replication groups was created and seems to be functioning without any errors. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

File screening not taking effect

$

Hi, i'm trying to impose a file screening that will block audio and video files on a certain folder so clients cant upload them. I have set a 100mb limit on the folder which has worked and set a file screening that blocks the aforementioned audio and video files. I have put the screening on the same directory as the 100mb limit and a user can still copy video and audio files into the folder but strangely enough, the admin on the domain controller cant upload audio or video files to it. So it is working but just not for the clients who can still upload what they want to it.

user’s data replication from one file server to remote another file

Dear All,

We want solution for server by windows system, what can I do it? Anybody help me. Right now we want to implement storage solution for DC and DR sites. Not full DR solution. Only DR site for company Data. We will implement full DR site step by step . so DC and Branch office distance will be 2 KM  and DC and DR site distance will be 40 KM. So we haveselected DR site for Munchiganj location.

We want to reduce backup software and data link free. So we want to backup all users’ data from one location by backup software and users will be accessible if one site is down.

Now DC site users are: 60, DR site users are: 20 and Branch office Users are: 50. Our exchange and AD is DAG system. Exchange is 2010, windows 2008 os with Hyper-V.

Below is our network diagram. Pls. help me for best solution and provide full guide line.

Windows 10 Client can not join domain Netjoin event 4097 error code 2699

I have a new widows 10 computer that I am attempting to  join  the SBS Standard Server 2011 domain.  I get this error in the event log: Source Netjoin Event 4097 error code 2699.  When I click for online help, the Windows 10 client help generated URL calls a Microsoft Office Advertisement.  A manual search for that code does not reveal a hit on 2699.    Apparently related errors do not occur on the  server event log.  Any Ideas?  I am using the Join a Domain button on the settings name screen to connect.  The Connect URL does not work.

DFS and FQDN Issue

$

I am having an issue where connecting to the dfs namespace from a client the first time is a very slow response but subsequent tries are much quicker. This issue also does not exist on domain joined servers in the same domain. Currently my namespace is a sub-domain and the upper level domain is a non-AD Dns domain.

Example: namespace is \\contsoNT.contoso.com\dfs where contoso.com's dns is being provided by unix.

I then followed this KB Article to make sure my dfs servers are using FQDN's and that seemed to work for the DFS servers but not the DC's

DFS Servers: fs1, fs2, fs3, fs4 - 2012 R2 Namespace and File servers

DC's: DC1, DC2, DC3 - 2008R2 Namespace servers

I was able to remove and re-add the namespace and set the key on the 2012 r2 Boxes but on the 2008 boxes it was erroring out and i couldnt delete the namespace just set the flag. I was running all of this from powershell on one of the 2012 boxes. Do i have to use DFSUTIL on the 2008 boxes in order to remover and re-add the namespace. Anyone have ides what could be the problem.

Hi,

i have recently build Server 2012 and now i want to add file share services on that server, share one department folder and under department there are many folders as per required, so if i share it as everyone full access then all the users have full access to all folders until i have manually restricted every user from every folder. is there any way so that when i created new folder nobody can access until i give permission to specified user.
