Move drives to new SATA port

I'm about to rebuild my home server running server 2012 into a new enclosure to et more drive bays. Part of that rebuild involves changing the sata expansion card for one with more ports. If I simply swap out the card and plug the old drives back into the new sata ports - will the server still recognise them and place them correctly in the storage-pool - or do the have to be connected back into ports with the same address or something?

Obviously I'll back-up anyway, but it'd be good to know how much I'm letting myself in for first!

Cheers

Extended partition but doesn't show in My Computer

Extended an iSCSI mounted disk from 500GB to 750GB in Server 2008 R2 Standard.  Saw the larger disk in Disk Management and extended the partition successfully.  Ran Chkdsk on the new drive and it shows the correct total, used, and free space on the drive.  However, when I open My Computer the drive still shows the same old size.

This is a physical HP server, iscsi drive is from a Netapp.

Things I've tried but didn't work:

1.  Diskpart and the extend filesystem command (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832316)
2.  Growing the disk by 1-50GB and re-extending the partition
3.  Made funny faces

I've seen this before in Server 2008 R2 on a VM but never on a physical machine.  Usually growing the disk and re-extending the parition has worked for me but not in this case.

Chkdsk results:

Windows has checked the file system and found no problems.

 805206015 KB total disk space.
 470081600 KB in 518767 files.
    250644 KB in 100413 indexes.
         0 KB in bad sectors.
722479 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
 334151292 KB available on disk.

File Sharing Issue

Hi Guys,

I am trying to do over the file sharing in my company. I recently started and when i came in i realized that the file sharing structure is very crazy. I want to do a very basic structure to simplify things:

4 Folders:

Shared  - for general shares in the company where users can have cross dept shares

Users - This is for users own folder on the server

Departments - This will then have all the departments listed in the folder: Sales ; Accounts ; IT ; Claims ; Operations and so on

Objective:

When i share the departments folder i want all users to see the various folders in the Departments folder but only have access to their respective department folder.

Issue:

When I share the departments folder everyone can browse to all sub folders. I then granted everyone list permission only to the department share. However i am not able to see the list of folders.

Unable to boot Hyper-V File Server

I created a File Server within Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012, and it will not boot after restarting the main server. I assume it is because Windows Server Manager is detecting it on the host. Is there a way I can bypass that or any other suggestion would be helpful

Hi,

I've been trying to use the storage spaces feature on windows 10 but whenever I try to create a pool I get the following message.

"No drives that work with Storage Space are available. Make sure that the drives you want to use are connected."

(I have two drives in my computer.)

All help is appreciated.

SMB 3 shares are not removed when shared shadow copy is deleted.

SMB 3 shares are not removed when shared shadow copy is deleted.  The error in event logs on the smb3 server is:

The FssAgent RPC server failed to delete shadowcopy share \\NULL\HYP40-CSV01@{0BD47BB7-4CE8-4927-B351-9EE223E97C5D} with error code 2147754760

The user has to remove the shares from configuration or reboot the server to clear the list of shares.  The FSS copy service is set to local system.

Quota information lost after intra-forest migration

Hi!

We are using disk-level quotas for users.

Currently we are migrating users from child domain to root domain. And after migration, there are two entries in quota report (button "Quota Entries") and migrated user quota starts from zero again.

I suspect that this problem is because user after migration has different SID and quotas are calculated based on SID.

Is there a way to preserve quota after migration? (we can manually change owner, but that would be impossible for huge amount of files).

Thanks!

Online Shared Folders

Hello Dears,

We are planning to create shared folders ( online drive or folder ) for each and every individual users. something like home folders but not home folders,

Our requirements are as follows:

1 - The shared folder must be accessed from anywhere in the Office and Internet with high security

2 - Automatically the files must be deleted after 48 hours from the shared folders

3 - 3000 shared folders should be created

4 - Each folder should be allowed 100 MB data merely

5 - Each user will have his own shared folder link to access from Internet or out side of the company

Our setup is Windows 2012 R2 Active directory. We do not have any private or public cloud technology in place.

Will you please advise or recommend that which microsoft technology can meet our requirement.

Appreciated for your help.

shadow copy and long path

Hi,

I am hitting a stupid issue with shadow copy.

I have a folder that need to be restored through shadow copy interface. The problem is that the forlder structure are way too long (i know, but with 3000+ users, best practice is difficult to maintain).

The problem is that when i want to restore the files i am hitting the "path too long" error. Therefore i have my file in shadow copy, but no way to get it out. The probleme does not come from the destination but the source.

I know shadow copy is not a backup solution and i should simply use my last backup. It is what i've done.

What i am looking for is a solution to use Shadow copy eventhough the path is too long (if it manage to do a copy of it, it should not have a problem restoring the file).

Cannot add Disk to Storage Pool

Hi,

I have a server 2012R2 Core installation that manages drives attached to it as a Storage Pool.

I wanted two add two new 4TB drives to it.

The first one added fine, but with the second one

$item = Get-PhysicalDisk physicaldisk6
Add-PhysicalDisk -StoragePoolFriendlyName "Main Pool" -PhysicalDisks $item

fails (without any kind of useful error message that I can find.

Same result if I add it via Server Manager. (Error adding task: failed)

Any ideas?

EDIT: If I try to create a new storage pool with just that one disk I get "Could not create Storage pool. One of the physical disks specified is not supported by this operation"

Greetings

windows 2008 file server

I mange a file server (OS = 2008). We have started delegating permissions on the file server (User, Admin, etc). The issue is.

Under a users regular account they launch a MMC under their admin credentials and use explorer.exe.

When using it this way they can not access the shares under their admin account (same if they used the computer management snap-in). It still acts like it is under their regular account.

How can I fix this?

NOTE: under their regular account they have read/ execute set to allowed under the root of the drive... The subfolders are the ones that the admin accounts may need access to.

Folder Redirection Removal

We have folder redirection setup, but one thing I can not work out is if there is a way to remove the data once a user is no longer employed?

We have implemented Active Directory and folder redirection only at the start of the year, as we migrated from Novell, so we have not had this in the past.

So what does everyone else do in this case?  How do you remove the data.

Thanks in advance.

Move File shares

Hello, <o:p></o:p>

We want to move our shared folders from one server to another . We plan to do that using Xcopy through CLI so that all the file share attributes will be intact . Wile moving the files we have decided to retain the same folder structure .  <o:p></o:p>

Eg :<o:p></o:p>

Old Path :   \\oldserver\XYZ\AA.doc<o:p></o:p>

New Path:    \\Newserver\XYZ\AA.doc<o:p></o:p>

Now many users have mapped network folders. My doubt is ' is there a way to avoid going to each workstation and deleting old and creating new mapped network?' Can we run any script and replace the server name in all the mapped network paths available on the workstation? <o:p></o:p>

Storage Spaces and Different Speed Drives

$

Hello,

I'm using server essentials 2012 r2.  I have set up a mirrored storage space for data storage (not system).  I would like to set up a new non-mirrored storage space where I'll put the "Client Backups" server folder to keep the images of my client computers.  All the drives in my system are currently 10K SAS drives.  If I'm creating a new pool that is not mirrored, can I add a 7200K drive to this or will it degrade the performance of my faster drives.  Being that this drive won't be accessed regularly, I can get a larger slower drive for less money.  I don't want to save money here and waste the extra money spent on the existing faster drives.

Many thanks,  JP

Many Thanks, JP

Data deduplication technical questions

$

Hi there,

I'm using win2012 R2 with deduplication and so far I'm really happy with it. Sorry for my rude english.

I'm looking for technical informations, myth busting, etc...

First :

Scrubbing and GC have a -FULL option. I understand scrubbing -FULL is good in case of hardware failure to prevent any further data corruption.

I was wondering, the difference between non -full and -full jobs for scrubbing and GC : when not using the -full switch, how windows select which blocks to check ? File's last modification time and Last job run time ?

Is it needed to run -full scrubbing and/or GC for maintenance purposes like every month or so ?

Second :

I read deduplication make use of VSS.

I see this KB : https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3066175

But when deduplication optimization job is running, I don't see any active vss shadow. Are VSS shadow created only for GC/scrubbing jobs ?

I'm using a dedicated SAN storage to store files that are being deduplicated by windows, I was wondering if I could get benefits in terms of performances if I move "shadow storage area" of my deduplicated  SAN volume on the local disks of the server ?

Thanks for your answers :)

Dir command matching multiple extensions - "*.jpg *.mp3 *.avi" not working properly

$

Hello,

I am using the dir command to list multimedia files on our storage server in the following format:

dir /s \\server_name_and_path\*.jpg *.mp3 *.avi  > \\path_to_output_file\Report.txt

It works, but it only matches the first file type specified, in this case "jpg". I looked online for the proper syntax, but no matter how I separate the file types or move the "/s" switch around it always only matches the first file type specified. I tried using "*.jpg,*.mp3,*.avi" and "*.jpg;*.mp3;*.avi" but it didn't help.

What am I doing wrong here?

I know I can get this done using PowerShell or many other tools, but I am trying to understand how dir works and what I am doing wrong. My goal is to have a list of specified multimedia files within a specific directory.

I am running this on Windows Server 2012 Standard, x64.

Thank you for your help.

Map File Server Drive not Working

$

My predecessor setup a "users" folder on the W2008R2 file server and set security and sharing permission for that directory. Then they created sub-directories within, naming them by using individual domain usernames, and limiting access to them through security settings. I now need to use GP to map these "user" drives when users log in, using \fileservername\users\%username% This works for all users except for one, b/c their login username has changed.

I changed the name of their user sub-directory on the file server to reflect their new username, but I can't map to it using this new name from any PC.  When I look at it's properties "sharing" tab (even though it is not directly shared), network file and folder sharing/network path still shows \fileservername\users\oldusername and it shows Shared "oldusername".

Again, it's not this sub-folder that is directly shared but it's parent "users" folder, ie. it is not a listed share within "Share and Storage Management", only the "users" share is. So I can't map this using the new name, only the old name.  the permissions look fine.  Some how it is retaining this old name in regard to the network.

As a test, I changed my own "user" drive in the same fashion and immediately my mapping to it broke.  I could then map it using it's new name.  So, this points to a problem with only this individual's user folder but I can't determine why.

One thing to note, but may not be an issue, is before all of this, we had previously configured on their host PC, the location of their default "My Documents" to be in this network user drive when it was using the old name.

Could there be some kind of caching issue, something else??

Tnx....
