My team is currently setting up a Windows 2012r2 Server as a ISCSI target.   The drivers under device manager for the Latest ISCSI  Target LocalMount Adapter have a date of 6/21/2006 and are version 6.3.9600.16384.    Are these the latest drivers available, and if not, how can we obtain newer drivers?

Thank you for your help.

File server Resource Manager

I am running server 2012 R2 and configuring FSRM in order to Archive data that has not been accessed in 547 days from the Y: to the X: but when I run the File Management Task it goes through the motions but nothing is Archived.  I am missing something.

Here is what I have configured for the File Management Task:

General Tab; gave task a name; checked Enable box; gave description.

Scope Tab; check mark in boxes Group files and User files; Y: is included in the scope.

Action Tab; Type = File expiration; Expiration directory X:\

Notification; 3 days before; e-mail

Report Tab; Logging check log file and error log file; Generate a report is checked with CSV; Delivery is checked to send to my email.  This part works because I do get the email report, it just has zeros for totals moved.

Condition Tab; I checked "Days since file was last accessed"  with 547 days

Schedule Tab; 1st of the Month

Dear All,

While running the DDEVAL tool, it gives a result with "no compression". I want some help on what to derive from values shown against "no compression".

There comes different types of understanding from different forums about this term, which is not concluding to one answer.

Can somebody provide actual understanding of this term while reported by DDEVAL tool?

Thanks,

HI

We have two shared folders on server. One is primary which is shared with the user and almost about to fill and other is not shared yet but I want to move all the data from primary to new one. some of the data is partially moved in new one. How can I use robocopy to sync new folder with primary one so that I don't get duplicates of current files already in new folder andsync any changes that are being performed in primary folder to new folderwhile users are using the primary folder share. New folder will be the new share for all users eventually.

Thanks

Windows Server Software RAID

Hello!

I need to make raid-10 or raid-6 on my hardware server with Windows 2016. There will be 6-16 local HDD inside, 6TB each.

Is it possible to make raid-10 or raid-6 with Storage Spaces (stan-alone) or in disk manager (old software raid - dinamic disks)?

According to my research:

- old software raid supports only raid 0, 1, 5

- Storage Spaces  supports: mirror ( two or three copies) - like raid-1, but there is no striping like in raid-10; parity - 1 failure to tollerate, like raid-5 https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-spaces/deploy-standalone-storage-spaces

Is it true?

Can you advice me a good modern hardware raid controller to make fast and resilient storage (raid-10 or 6)? Adaptec or broadcom, for examle...

Windows Server 2012 r2 shared drive file access VERY slow

Whenever I open a file that's located in a shared folder on a drive with Windows Server 2012 r2 (videos and PDFs with graphics, especially), said file takes forever to load, videos often stutter, etc. This affects every computer connected to the domain with access to these shared folders/drive. Is there a fix for this? I haven't been able to find one so far.

Domain user with Full Control and Owner of a network shared folder cannot change its permission

A domain user account has been granted "Full Control" permission and the Owner of a network shared folder (sub-folder).

When try to change the folder permission (e.g. Add/remove other user, disable inheritable permission, etc.). Show "Access is denied". Only domain admin and the server's local administrator can edit the permission.

What should I configure to allow a domain user account to modify folder permission?

Error : No network provider accepted the given network path" when trying to access server via UNC

Hello. I have been beating my head on this problem for a while. I have a Windows 2003 R2 SP1 server, with an Windows XP SP3 client that is having difficulty accessing it via UNC (\\servername). The server it is trying to get to also happens to be the DNS server.

When contact is attempted, I receive the error "no network provider accepted the given network path". I m able to ping the server by name, and a ping -a resolved the correct name.

I am also able to perform a nslookup from the client and it resolves names properly from the server it is trying to contact.

I've tried just about everything that I can think of:

  • Configured the client to use a DHCP server
  • Ensured that the host file was not interfering
  • flushed DNS on the client
  • Ensured client was appearing properly in DNS
  • Ensured that the DNS server the client is contacting is correct (it is the server I am trying to get to).
  • I cleaned an extra nameserver out of DNS that no longer exists.
  • Enabled salvaging on DNS
  • Performed system restore on the client
  • Disabled the firewall on the client.
  • Ran SFC /scannow

One very odd aspect of this problem is that if I reboot the server then the client connects to it without issue, for about a day. I have to reboot the entire server, and not just the DNS service.

It is just happening to one client. Is there any suggestions that you'd have that I can try?

Cannot Provision Shares using Share and Storage Management - 2008 R2 Enterprise

Hello,

I have an issue with all of my 2008 R2 Enterprise servers. When I use the "Provision a Shared Folder Wizard", and click "Browse", none of my hard disk volumes show up and therefore I cannot share anything. If I manually type in a location (c:\test), I receive an error message:

"c:\test\: The specified location is on a volume that does not exist." - Even though I am certain this location is valid

However, if I go to the c:\folder, right click it, and share it this way, it works and even shows up in my shared folder list in the Share and Storage Management too.

Oddly, my CD-ROM drive shows up as an available location to share from, but none of my disk drives show up.

These servers are all hosted on VMWare ESXi.

Thank You

Hello,

Ive installed a Windows Server 2019 with the Feature "SMB1.0/CIFs File Sharing Support" plus the Services SSDP Discovery and the UPnP Device Host.

On an other Server i installed a Storage-Software and created a WORM Storage with and SMB Share.

My problem is i cant get on to this share with Windows Server 2019 but with all other OS (Windows Server 2016/2012R2 Windows 7/10) the connection works fine.

Is there anything i can do?
Windows Server 2019 is up to Date.

Audit file access from Server 2012 cluster

We have 2 x Virtual 2012 R2 servers in a failover cluster being access via a namespace

Eg

Namespace = fileserver

Server 1 Virtual = fileserverA

Server 2 Virtual = fileserverB

SAN Storage with RDM mappings to each host

users access the files from the server eg

\\filserver\IT\file.doc

I would like to audit the share IT for user file access

is this possible with a cluster environment, if so any details would be greatly appreciated.  I have looked at guides to turn on auditing, which I have completed, but I am not seeing any file access logs in eventviewer

Problem with windows explorer and network drive

Hi !

We have Hyper-V Windows 2016 server with some virtual servers (in domain). One from these virtual servers is backup server where we have Veeam Backup. Together with this server we have Synology DS916+(homegroup). Everything together work great, to one day, something went wrong and from that day we didn´t see Synology on network via windows explorer, but ping works, and open synology management via web browser works. Something what is interesting, connect to shared folders from local computer in the same network works (win 10). Connect to shared folders (synology) no works only from server ( Hyper-V and any virtual server). Veeam didn´t see synology ,too.

When we want connect to synology by virtual server, it come with error : "Windows cannot access \\ (synology name / IP address) Error code : 0x80004005 or 0x80070035

but when we want connect from Hyper V error is: "The semaphore timeout period has expired"

We try a lot of "solutions" but not works.

I am ready reply to your all questions.

Sorry for my bad english and thanks for all answers.

Shadow copies access on network drives in a AD environment

Hello,

I have a WS 2008 R2 working with AD configured.

There are shadow copies configured on 2 hard disk that have network shares.

The thing is that I can manage shadow copies from the server without problems, but users cannot see any shadow copy on the network shares.

It would be interesting if users will be able to restore files from shadow copies on the network shares. ¿Is it possible?

Also ¿Is it possible to define certain folders where users can/cannot recover shadow copies?

Thanks in advance.

Storage Spaces Direct and Diskpart Automount Policy

$

We're using storage spaces direct as a disk target for backup storage.  Our backup product has a direct SAN attached method for backup of VMware virtual machines versus using a proxy that uses HotAdd to send the data over the network.  This is where the Windows OS has block level access to the storage but doesn't need to mount it.  My intent was do to this with HBAs in the physical machines hosting the storage spaces direct volumes.

The requirements for the direct SAN attached storage are to disable the automount feature in Windows.  There's a variety of ways to do this, I would use DISKPART commands:

DISKPART> AUTOMOUNT DISABLE

What I can't find is any documentation anywhere if this is a supported configuration to disable automount in a storage spaces direct cluster.  The only thing I know for sure is that the storage spaces direct cluster as setup currently has this feature enabled.

I think it would be OK to disable it since the volumes are controlled by the cluster service and I'm fairly certain that handles the mounting of volumes for CSV and any other virtual disks directly associated with roles controlled by the cluster.

I'm also not sure this forum is the correct one for storage spaces direct questions, and I'd appreciate a point in the right direction on where to post if it isn't.

I create a Storage Pool in server 2019 and downgraded to 2016 and was unable to use the pool

In my Lab environment I create a Storage pool on an array (MSA60) with server 2019 and then downgraded 2016 when 2019 was pulled back. 2016 could not put the pool back together again. (no operation pools)  Half the disk would not show up in the Storage spaces UI.  they show up in Devices, but not in Disk Manager, So I went back to 2019 core server (only version available to me) and now I can see the pools, virtual disks, and volumes.   I tried to take the VMs and move them to a Server 2016 server....they were not readable. but on a Windows 10 Preview I could connect to them and they work perfectly.  I still have 3 TB of data I want to move back to 2016, but even Robo Copy can't get them off the array with Core Server.  Not sure where to go now.

When is server 2019 going to be available again...what am I missing?

Best practice for population backup on Win server2012 before setting up DFS

$

Hi. So other than the obvious and not so recommended one way replication, what do you guys recommend for populating the 'backup' file server (which is an AWS instance)? Over all its about 5 TB of data which is distributed among different shared drives on the primary server. Also is one way replication still problematic with win server 2008/2012/2016?
