UNC paths for new VM

$

Greetings,

I am going to be changing hardware for a few of our servers and I need to completely wipe and reload a server with a new OS. Currently we use this server for some of our file shares. My question is, if I recreate the server as a VM with the same server name and same path to files, will the current UNC paths still work?

Thanks

DFSReplication - SeSecurityPriviledge issue

Hello,

I am using DFS on two windows server 2016. While configuring the replication i see below error message

SERVER2002(Copy Folder): Security cannot be set on the replicated folder. The process does not possess the 'SeSecurityPrivilege' priviledge which is required for this operation.

My question is how to enable this SeSecurityPrivilege on that replicated folder to get rid of this issue.

Thanks

Workfolders issues

Hi all,

Since the most recent official Windows 10 update (1803 April update) I'm experiencing some issues.

* In explorer, some pictures get thumbnails, some don't (as seen in the figure). Tried deleting the thumbnail cache but that doesn't help.

* The Photos app doesn't sync pictures from the WorkFolders anymore, and doens't show thumbnails anymore for videos.

* In exlporer the icons for 'Download state' aren't correct. Some folders have a 'Failed sync' icon, but all the files inside are downloaded correctly.

A clean install of the client operating system doesn't help. Anyone else experiencing these issues? Is a fix available soon?

Auditing all users file access - too much information

Hi, I have enabled a GPO With the following: Computer Configuration\Policies\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Advanced Audit Policy Configuration\Audit Policies\Object Access -> Audit File System -Success on a file server.
After that, I have enabled successful Create files/Create Folders on a folder for the built-in group Everyone.

That part works fine, I can see when users are creating files on the folders. But I also get a lot of Extreme amounts of other events logged in the Security log, and everything is coming from the backup agent running on the server (NetBackup in this case).

How come that a backup agent is creating the events like this? It makes filtering much harder afterwards. The business requirements is to audit Everyone who is adding files to a specific folder, not all the rest of the server. The server is Win2008 R2.

Example:

An attempt was made to access an object.

Hi,

I have ownership rights on one network folder, when I try to grant rights to other users I got following error:

I also can't copy any file to USB storage from this folder.

I'll appreciate any possible support to fix it.

Thanks

Folder Permissions not being inherited by 3rd level subfolders

$

We are having problems with Folder Permissions being Inherited to the 3rd level folder on Windows 2016 Server.

We have a file server on Windows 2012. We moved a folder "HR" to a new file server on Windows 2016.

Root: E
Folder 1 Name" "HR"
- Sub Folder 2 Name: "Employees"
- Sub Folder 3 Name: "Documents"

1. For "HR" folder we disabled inheritance from root E.
2. Modified the Securit settings under "Advanced Security Settings"
3. Checked "Replace all child objects"

The Folder permissions propogate to folders "HR" and "Employees". However, they do not propogate to the 3rd level folder "Documents" and downwards.

How do we correct this?

DFS Replication

I have a Forest A and it has two Child Domains, Domain A & Domain B.

I'm trying to establish DFS-R from Domain A to Domain B. The Connectivity between the Domain Controllers and File Servers is in place on all the required ports (AD, SMB, DFS etc).

As I can access the shares manually between the domains, I'm in the middle of creating a new Replication Group on Domain A.

On the Hub Server (Destination server) page , I get an error after providing the name of the sever, FS1.DomainB.

<<DomainControllerName.DomainB>>.Cannot connect to Domain Controller. The RPC Server is unavailable.

Remove Physical Disk from Storage Pool

$

We have a file server running in Raid 0 which is handled by the OS(windows server 2016)

The components of the pool are:
1. 2 1TB Seagate Barracuda
2. 1 4TB Toshiba SAS

From the pool the virtual disk created with these settings:
1. Layout = Simple
2. Provisioning = Thin
3. Capacity = 1.56TB

Now I am instructed to remove the 4TB from the pool because we will use it in another server.

Is it possible to remove the hard drive safely without affecting the data? I've been into a lot of forums and instructions about removing disk from the pool but their pool layout is in Parity and not in Simple layout. Also from what I understand Simple layout is the software raid version of the Raid 0 hardware raid.

Please give some advise to pull this off. Thanks Everyone.

Please Explain me how i set folder rights and permissions as mentioned below Image.

Deleted DFS Replication folder, now I cannot delete the contents of the Read Only folder

Hi.

I am cleaning up my DFS environment, moving some data to new servers, deleting and recreating groups, and once the new configuration is fully built, I am deleting old data to reclaim space.

I removed a DFS Replication Group - on purpose. One of the replicated folders in the group was marked Read Only. I forgot to change it back to Read Write before I deleted the group. Now I cannot delete the data in that location - it's all set to Read Only.

I cannot delete, rename, or change anything in this folder in any way. I cannot change permissions on this data. I cannot change ownership. I've tried sharing the parent folder and giving everyone full control. I've tried ICACLS and TAKEOWN - I get Access denied. Right-clicking the folder/Properties/Security/Advanced, if I try to take ownership or Change Permissions, it causes all controls to become grayed out and I can do nothing.

I've done all this with the DFS Replication Service stopped and disabled. I've tried it all as domain admin, local admin, given a specific account local admin access. Nothing works.

I've searched for an answer and found only the things I've already tried. I have also searched to try to find out exactly how/where DFS sets the Read Only flag, but I cannot find this information.

Anyone know how I can regain access to these files and folders so I can delete them?

Thank you!

Dan

FSRM connect to file server error

I have two file servers(A1, and B1), and both of them are Windows 2012 R2. There is no problem for me to connect A1 by using FSRM from my workstation, but when I tried to connect to B1, it gave me error.

File Server Resource Manager successfully connect to the computer but couldn't connect to the file server resource manager service. This can occur if you are not a member of local administrator group on that server.

My account is a member of domain admin group, and that group in B1 server's local admin group. B1 server is cloned from A1, so they have the same settings. Please help and thank you.

Adding links to the 'Shared Folders' folder in Server 2012r2

Hi Guys

I created a couple of folders for users after the Server sent out the 'Shared Folders' link to users who join the domain.

Id like to add shortcuts to that 'Shared Folders' folder on the server so the show up in a central place for the users so they don't have to surf to the file server.

As the Administrator I tried to copy a shortcut into the \\FileServer\Shared Folders folder but was denied as I didn't have permission, how can I add these shortcuts please?

Issue with setting up an iSCSI initiator.

$

I am trying to get an iSCSI connection between two servers to work and have hit an issue.

I have two servers (SRV1, and FS1). SRV1 is the iSCSI target/server and FS1 is to be the client/initiator.

To create the iSCSI target, I do this (on SRV1):

# Install the iSCSI target feature on SRV1
Install-WindowsFeature FS-iSCSITarget-Server
# Create a folder on SRV1 to hold the iscis virtual disk
$NIHT = @{
  Path        = 'C:\iSCSI'
  ItemType    = 'Directory'
  ErrorAction = 'SilentlyContinue'
}
New-Item @NIHT | Out-Null
# Create an iSCSI disk (that is a LUN):
$LP = 'C:\iSCSI\SalesData.Vhdx'
$LN = 'SalesTarget'
$VDHT = @{
   Path        = $LP
   Description = 'LUN For Sales'
   SizeBytes   = 100MB
 }
New-IscsiVirtualDisk @VDHT
# Create the iSCSI target:
$THT = @{
  TargetName   = $LN
  InitiatorIds = 'DNSNAME:SRV1.Reskit.Org'
}
New-IscsiServerTarget @THT
# Create iSCSI disk target mapping:
Add-IscsiVirtualDiskTargetMapping -TargetName $LN -Path $LP

This works, however, when I go to use the target on FS1 get an issue.

Here is the code:

# Adjust and start the service on FS1
Set-Service MSiSCSI -StartupType 'Automatic'
Start-Service MSiSCSI
# Setup portal to SRV1
$PHT = @{
  TargetPortalAddress     = 'SRV1.Reskit.Org'
  TargetPortalPortNumber  = 3260
}
New-IscsiTargetPortal @PHT
# Find and view the SalesTarget on portal
$Target  = Get-IscsiTarget |
               Where-Object NodeAddress -Match 'SalesTarget'
# Connect to the target
$CHT = @{
  TargetPortalAddress = 'SRV1.Reskit.Org'
  NodeAddress         = $Target.NodeAddress
}
Connect-IscsiTarget  @CHT
# Set up the disk
Get-Disk | Where-Object BusType -eq 'iscsi'

All the code seems to work except for the last line, where I use Get-Disk to get the iSCSI disks, and I get zero output. If I use just Get-Disk, this just returns the host's C: and not the iSCSI disk over from SRV1.

How do I see the iSCSI disk? Clues as to what I am doing wrong?

And - all best practice suggestions relating to the code fragments above would also be most welcome.

Moving from DFS on cluster to single server without changing rootname

$

Hi

Current setup is a single Win2012R2 server in a failover cluster. The other Win2012R2 node has been shut down, so not much failover clustering left ;)

This server (SERVER01) runs DFS (standalone namespaces) which is accessed by the clients using the name OURDFS. So drives are mapped with \\OURDFS\Shares01\Data01,\\OURDFS\Shares02\Data01 and so on..... All data being accessed through DFS is located on file servers on the network, so it's only DFS Namespace service this server is hosting.

Now this server needs to be closed down pretty soon, so I need to move DFS to another 2012R2 server (or newer version). For reasons I don't wanna address here, we still need to be able to access the drives using the same UNC paths.

Method 1: I have thought about taking SERVER01 offline and just building a new server which I call OURDFS and configure it with the same namespaces and folders, but this probably is a point of no return as I can't fall back to the old SERVER01 if anything goes wrong as I'll be removing the OURDFS AD computer object created by the clustering service when I join the new server to the domain. So no going back from this point.

Method 2: Also thought about adding another node to the cluster (SERVER02) and then shutting down SERVER01, but this leaves me with a cluster I actually don't need anymore and I fear I can't remove the cluster without also removing the AD computer object and then messing up DFS. Probably could then fix it by just renaming the server but this brings me back to method 1 i believe.....

So I actually don't not know which way is the better way when I wanna minimize downtime and most importantly of all my weekend-work time :)

Perhaps I'm missing a better solution or perhaps it's no biggie and I should just go ahead with one of the mentioned methods.

Also if you've got any caveats please help me out by mentioning them :)

Best

Thomas

Can more VSS hardware providers coexist on the same server?

$

This is a general question. Can more VSS hardware providers coexist on the same server?

Recently I came across a situation in which two VSS hardware providers are installed on the same server. The problem is that uninstalling one of them completed OK but the provider was still registered with the system VSS. The "vssadmin list providers" command shows that the vss provider is still registered in the system VSS. I received the following explanation from the development support, and I wanted to get your feedback. I replaced the actual vss providers name with A and B in order to keep that issue undisclosed.

"In environment having both of A and B, their registry information were in confusion, special A's vssprov.dll file. When uninstall A, the registry information of A's vssprov.dll indicates it is used by B, instead of A. So when you uninstall A, the A's vssprov.dll won't be uninstalled completely. Even though you uninstalled B firstly, there is no step to unistall A's vssprov.dll in uninstall B process and the A's vssprov.dll will be left. After uninstall B, the registry information of A's vssprov.dll is still displayed that A's vssprov.dll is used by B though B has been unistalled."

Is this an installation issue?

I have the idea that you can have more hardware providers installed on the same server, and they can work without problem. Is that so?

Looking for information on $NOCSC$

I'm looking for any information on the purpose of $NOCSC$ after a server name.  From another post I saw a user mention it is supposed to bypass the local offline file cache.  That makes sense from the name if it stands for No Client Side Caching.  However I can find no MS documentation to back this up.  Anybody know of either technical or development documents that reference using \\servername$NOCSC$ to bypass the cache and when it should and should not resolve?  Thanks in advance!

Storage Space Error - All Drives CanPool = False "Insufficient Capacity"

'm trying to create a storage space, but receiving the error "The Request is Not Supported."  I've tried creating the pool using a different combination of hard drives and on two different computers.  I receive the same error with all attempts.

I've have run the command get-physicaldisk in PowerShell and all of the drives have a status of False under CanPool.  I followed up with the get-physical | FL command and it shows the "CannotPoolReason" as "Insufficient Capacity" for all of the drives.  I found some information that you needed at least 1 GB for each drive.  The minimum amount of free space on the 6 drives I'm attempting to add is 1.36 TB.  The others are all 4 or 5 TB drives.  Does anyone know how I can get these labeled as True for the CanPool status?  I feel this is the problem, but I don't know how to change the status.

Storage Migration Service - Cutover

Does the Cutover process in Storage Migration Service have any option for last minute synchronization of the Source and Target server? While testing I saw that updates on the Source server during the migration process was not replicated to the target when running Cutover.
